About Helyne Jennings

Helyne Jennings

Abstract textile & mixed media artist making wall art, print and jewellery.

My roots are in textiles and embroidery but my work has always been very experimental incorporating mixed media on paper, paint on fabric, block printing, layering colour and stitch to create texture and surface. I love 20C abstract art, bold use of colour, shape and form, aspects I explore in my own work.
I work from home in a bijoux studio in my garden under a very productive fig tree, the sounds and activity of nature all around me. I live in Torrington, Devon, betwixt the moors and the sea so cannot help but be inspired by our moody expansive landscapes, but travel has also and continues to play it’s part in my progress with many memories of trips to Egypt, Indonesia and Australasia in another life during and in the years ensuing college.
I studied embroidery at Loughborough College of Art and Tapestry at the Royal College of Art, taking a studio in Clerkenwell, London after achieving a Craft Council Setting Up Grant.
My work has taken me to far flung places, having solo shows in Singapore, Tokyo, New Zealand and the UK with pieces in many private and corporate collections including the Crafts Council.

I also make hand painted paper ear studs and brooches, these are like little miniature abstracts, wearable art. Each piece is completely unique and handmade using layers of paper that are laminated together, this makes them strong and durable and very lightweight. Out of making the compositions for the brooches I had the idea of scanning them to make digital prints. This idea has evolved to my now making giclee prints from scanned fragments of my hand painted papers and stitched fabrics to create original printed abstract artworks.
