About Dizzy Duck Crafts Canal Art

Dizzy Duck Crafts Canal Art

Canal art style roses and daisies painted on home and garden wares.

My name is Janice. My husband and I have a narrowboat called Dizzy Duck. Whilst we are exploring the waterways, I enjoy seeing traditional roses and daises painted on narrowboats and their accessories.

During lockdown, I experimented with painting in this style and found that I was quite good at it. From there, Dizzy Duck Crafts was born. In the future, I hope to be able to sell some of my work from our boat.

To start with, I used the spare room to paint in. Last year, we built a studio in the garden, so I now have my own dedicated space to work.

Canal art is on the Heritage crafts' red list for endangered crafts. I try to paint on a wide range of items, some traditional, some more contemporary, in an attempt to bring canal art to a wider audience. Some of the items I paint on are new and others are upcycled. I love rescuing things from charity shops and giving them a new lease of life. If an item is upcycled, it will be clearly labeled as such.

I worked as a primary school teacher for 28 years and now work for a local charity delivering training autism training to health and social care professionals.

We have a cat called Ebony. She travels with us when we are out on the boat. Unfortunately, she doesn't like the smell of the enamel paint, so she prefers not to be in the studio when I am painting.
