About Cool for Cats UK

Cool for Cats UK

Eco-friendly toys for cool cats and cat-inspired goodies for cool cat people!

Owning a cat shouldn't mean you have to fill your home with naff cat products. Cool For Cats UK toys are designed for maximum cat-appeal, and to be easy on the human eye. They have the added bonus of being eco-friendly, as I make all my toys from recycled and upcycled clothing (which is thoroughly laundered prior to being transformed into cat toys).

The toys are also designed to be durable, and are rigorously tested by my five rescue cats - and some of their friends - before being unleashed on the general cat population. Each toy is filled with an irresistible *catnip/valerian/silver vine mix, and a little British sheep's wool to provide extra bulk.

I also cater for cat loving humans with cat-inspred goodies and cards.

* No doubt you're already familiar with catnip (nepeta cataria) and the effect it has on our feline friends. The catnip used to fill Cool for Cats UK toys is a premium-grade Canadian variety, and is by far the strongest cultivar of this herb I've managed to locate!

Valerian (valeriana officinalis) is a perennial plant native to Europe (including the UK) and parts of Asia. Valerian root has the same effect on cats as catnip - they can't get enough of it! I should mention that dried valerian doesn't smell all that pleasant to us humans - it's a bit like stinky socks! Don't be too alarmed though as the odour soon becomes undetectable to the human nose, but seems to remain of interest to cats for much longer than catnip - my cats still sometimes drool over a valerian-filled toy which I made for them a couple of years ago.

Silver vine (actinidia polygama) or Japanese catnip is related to the Kiwi fruit, and native to East Asia. The plant contains two compounds which are attractive to cats. One of these compounds is completely different to the chemical attractant found within catnip and valerian, and so cats who show no interest in catnip or valerian often respond to silver vine. A friend of mine tested some silver vine on her two cats, who are both fifteen years old and have never understood why everyone makes such a fuss about catnip. Both cats responded with lots of chin rubbing, rolling around and drooling - so a resounding paws-up then!
