Hello my names Catherine and welcome to my shop ‘Catherine O’Neill Art’
The inspiration for my work can come from absolutely anywhere. From the natural world, books and music. I trained in textile design quite a long time ago, but my interest in printmaking was sparked after I attended a small class in my local gallery. It really fired me up so much so that I invested in a press and my family and I all get stuck in. We started on the kitchen table but soon ran out of space so we now print in a garden studio, in Barnsley, South Yorkshire.
I love all aspects of printmaking but I am particularly interested in Collagraphs. I love the experimental nature of collagraph printmaking, I get has much pleasure from making a plate as I do from the prints. I have seen this style of printmaking at craft events and was curious to learn a little bit more about it.
What is a Collagraph Plate?
A collagraph plate is made from firm card (mount board) and you collage it using textured materials. Ranging from wallpapers, old bits of netting from fruit bags, fabrics, tape really anything which is flat enough to go through a press. It really is very versatile. After you have done all the sticking and scratching and cutting etc, cover it in shellac so it has a tough surface and then you are ready to print.
