Hello! I’m Jo, the maker behind A Thread of Happy, creating cheerful machine-embroidered gifts and home decor from my home in Darlington.

My creative journey began in 2012, while I was on long-term sick leave from my job in retail. At the time, I had no idea that making one simple thing for my daughter would eventually lead me here.

It all started with a dream catcher. My daughter had been struggling with nightmares after an electric shock, and when I couldn’t find what I was looking for in the shops, I decided to try making one myself. I had never really been a crafty person before, so it was very much a case of figuring things out as I went along.

Seeing her smile when it was finished made all the effort worthwhile. My son soon wanted one too, and that small beginning sparked something I hadn’t expected - I discovered that I actually really enjoyed creating.

From there, I started experimenting with different crafts, beads, charms and materials, making bracelets, keyrings and all sorts of little pieces. I gradually learnt new skills, tried new ideas and found myself wanting to make more.

As my love of creating grew, I began dreaming of owning an embroidery machine. At the time, though, it felt completely out of reach. Eventually, that dream became a reality.

In 2021, I started focusing more on machine embroidery, and it quickly became the heart of what I create. I love watching a design come together one stitch at a time and seeing something that started as an idea turn into a finished piece.

Living with illness means creating has become much more than simply something I enjoy. It gives me focus, keeps my mind occupied and gives me a real sense of purpose and achievement. Being able to turn that creativity into something that might brighten somebody else’s day makes it even more worthwhile.

I’m not very good at sticking to just one type of thing, so you’ll find quite a mixture at A Thread of Happy. I make embroidered keyrings and bag charms, bookmarks, needle minders, hanging decorations, heart hangers, candle mats, coasters, tealight covers and plenty of other little creations that catch my imagination along the way.

I especially enjoy making things with a bit of personality. Some are cheerful and encouraging, some are sentimental, some are useful and some are simply designed to make you smile. I also enjoy personalised pieces and I’m always happy to consider custom ideas where I can.

The name A Thread of Happy seemed to sum everything up perfectly. There’s the embroidery thread running through so much of what I make, but also the little bit of happiness I hope runs through each piece too.

Everything is made by me from my home in Darlington, whether I’m creating one special item or making several pieces to match. I never want anything to feel like it’s simply another order on a list. I want every piece to feel thoughtfully made, cared about and a little bit special when it reaches its new home.
