Hello!
My name is Agnis Smallwood, I am a Designer Maker Researcher Educator and I live and work from my home in Leeds, Yorkshire.
I specialise in hand woven textiles. I love the infinite possibilities that present themselves when weaving. Selecting different coloured and textured yarns and combining them in the warp and weft in different ways.
I have two looms, a small 4 shaft wooden table loom as well as a large metal framed loom which sits on the floor called a dobby loom.
My work is inspired by my natural surroundings. For many years I have been inspired by those plants and grasses that grow naturally at the side of the road, or between the cracks in pavements, without human intervention often over-looked and forgotten. I use the colours and forms found here as the starting point for many pieces of my work.
In 2020 the world changed dramatically for everyone. I no longer spent time travelling to deliver workshops across the county, where I would take little detours and take pictures along the way! Instead I immersed myself into my garden. I dug and weeded and created some vegetable beds. I sowed seeds and watched them with intense fascination as they grew slowly each day. It would provide me with escapism from the challenges of the world around me. I think it was inevitable really looking back that this would filter into my work and grow into a new collection of work, around fruit and vegetables. Taking inspiration once again from the intense and beautiful colours that can be found within nature.
I have been self-employed since setting up my business in 2009 after graduating from Cumbria Institute of the Arts with a BA in Contemporary Applied Arts. I have since continued to develop my skills and graduated with an MA in Artist Teachers and Contemporary Practices in 2017 from Goldsmiths, University of London.

Arrived quite quickly, well packaged and gift wrapped with a lovely personalised message. Agnis has generously made a donation to the Trussell food bank from the proceeds. Very impressed and pleased with the quality and colour of the placemats. The fabric texture has integrity and great environmentally friendly credentials. Would highly recommend.
