TEXAS CRAZY HORSE
Did you know that any product made of crazy horse leather can last for more than 20 years?
Crazy horse leather is a type of full-grain cowhide treated with a coating of wax and oil, giving it a rugged, vintage appearance that develops a distinctive patina with use. Despite the name, it is not made from horses. The leather is cowhide, and the name comes from its historical use in horse tack and saddles.
In addition to its longevity, the product becomes more beautiful with time. The reason for this is simple — crazy horse leather is made from full-grain leather.
Full-grain leather is the highest quality leather in the world. It is popularly known for its toughness and durability. It is no surprise it is used to make horse saddles.
A saddle needs to be tough and strong so as not to break, notwithstanding the strength of the horse. This is why crazy horse leather is the traditionally used leather for this.
What is Crazy Horse Leather?
Crazy horse leather is full-grain leather that gets better and more beautiful with time and usage. Rather than wear out, a crazy horse leather develops a patina.
The leather is made from an entire cowhide. Apart from the hair, nothing else is removed. You can easily tell the history of the cow from which it is made by the spots and marks on it.
Crazy horse leather is not from horse leather as the name might imply. It is called ‘crazy horse leather’ because it is used for horse saddles. The word ‘crazy’ signifies its toughness as it can hold a horse no matter how strong it is.
Why Is It Called “Crazy Horse” Leather?
Crazy horse leather is not made from horsehide, and the name is not a reference to the Lakota leader Crazy Horse.
The name comes from the leather’s traditional use in horse gear, including saddles, harnesses, and tack. It had to handle friction, movement, weather, and hard daily use.
Today, crazy horse leather is made from full-grain cowhide treated with waxes or oils. This creates the pull-up effect, where bends, scratches, and handling marks shift the colour of the surface.
That is why it works so well for wallets, notebook covers, bags, pen cases, and other pieces used often. It does not stay factory-new. It records use, darkens over time, and develops a richer patina.
How is Crazy Horse Leather Made?
To make crazy horse leather, the entire cowhide skin is used. Nothing is to be removed from it except the hair. A thick layer of a special kind of wax is then applied to the surface of the cowhide after it’s been smoothed and polished.
The wax works on the fiber of the leather to give it some special effects in tone, shape, and appearance. The wax also makes it resistant to liquid, thereby improving its durability.
How to Care for Your Crazy Horse Leather
1. Clean immediately
When your crazy horse leather gets stained, use a lightly damp cloth to clean the stain. If it gets wet, use a dry cloth to clean the moisture gently.
It helps if you clean immediately as you don’t want the stain to stay long on it and turn permanent. When water stays long on it, it can leave a stain.
2. Don’t use chemical-based cleaners
What sets crazy horse leather apart is the special wax applied to it. This wax is a natural substance that works on the fiber of the leather. If you feel the need to remove a stain, chemical-based cleaners can weaken the wax and damage the leather. Instead, use a soft cloth, warm water, and mild hand soap to remove the stain.
3. Use leather creams or conditioners
As much as the marks and scratches on a crazy horse leather tell both the history of the leather and its use, not everyone likes them. If you want to make your crazy horse leather look as good as new, apply a leather balm or conditioner to it.

The Crazy Horse Leather for You
The highest quality leather bags, shoes, wallets, and belts are made of crazy horse leather. It is the most expensive leather in the market as it is hand-made and not processed with chemicals. If used with care, a crazy horse leather product will still be strong and firm, even after 20 years.
VEGETABLE TANNED LEATHER
Vegetable tanned leather is leather preserved using natural tannins extracted from tree bark, leaves, and roots. Most commonly oak, chestnut, mimosa, and quebracho instead of chromium salts. The process takes between 30 and 60 days (compared with 1–2 days for chrome-tanning), produces leather that develops a rich patina over years of use, and represents less than 10% of global leather production. It is the leather of choice for us at Acorn Leather.

What is Vegetable Tanned Leather?
Vegetable-tanned leather is made using natural tannins found in organic materials to add a unique look and feel to the animal hide. Harmful chemicals are avoided.
We love using this kind of leather in our range, including for our popular leather journals and leather gifts.
While the names may sound similar, vegetable-tanned leather is not to be confused with vegan leather, which is not a real leather product at all.
To better understand how vegetable-tanned leather differs from other types of leather products, it’s important to know how it’s created. So we're going to have a quick look.
How is Vegetable-Tanned Leather Made?
Vegetable-tanned leather is made by submerging animal hide in a water or saltwater solution. This removes the fur and makes the hide flexible. Vegetable-based oils and waxes are then applied for a tender, malleable finish.
The Leather Tanning Process
Vegetable-tanned leather begins immediately after an animal is slaughtered. The "green" or new hide is salted to preserve it then hung in a structure called a beam-house.
From there, the hide is moved to a liming pit where it is immersed in a natural chemical substance called lime to remove the hair from the hides through dissolution.
Hides are then placed in a vat containing tannin — in this case, natural tree bark or other organic materials. This soaking process helps to dehydrate the leather, contributing to softness and a nice hand feel.
The vegetable tanning process is a long and artisanal one, taking up to two months to complete,
CHROME TAN LEATHER
Chrome-tanned leather is the most widely used leather in the world, accounting for the majority of all leather goods produced today.
It is popular with manufacturers because the process is fast, cost-effective, and produces a soft, consistent material that is easy to work with.
Shoppers often encounter the term when comparing different types of leather and may notice that many mass-market bags, shoes, and jackets are made this way.
The appeal of chrome-tanned leather lies in its feel and versatility. It is supple, lightweight, and more resistant to water than vegetable-tanned leather. Because the tanning process is completed in days instead of weeks, it is also significantly cheaper to produce, which means products made with chrome-tanned leather are often more affordable.
However, there are trade-offs. The use of chromium salts and other chemicals raises environmental concerns, particularly around waste and water treatment. The leather’s durability can also be lower than that of vegetable-tanned alternatives, and it does not develop as rich or distinctive a patina over time. While chrome-tanned leather can be beautiful and functional, it is often associated with high-volume, lower-cost manufacturing rather than artisanal craftsmanship.
How it works / What it means in leather goods
Chrome tanning is a chemical process that stabilizes the collagen fibers in animal hide using chromium(III) salts. Hides are placed in a solution, often called a tanning bath, where the chromium ions bond with the fibers. This process is much faster than vegetable tanning, usually taking one to three days from start to finish.
The resulting leather is softer, more pliable, and often more uniform in appearance. It is also more resistant to water and heat, which makes it versatile for a wide range of products. Because the tanning process is efficient, manufacturers can produce large quantities of chrome-tanned leather quickly and at lower cost, which is why it dominates the global leather industry.
While chrome-tanned leather is durable enough for everyday use, it does not have the same structural density as vegetable-tanned leather. It is less likely to stiffen or harden over time, but it also does not develop the same depth of character. Many shoppers who value a rich patina and evolving texture prefer vegetable-tanned or full-grain leather for that reason.
