Wood turning is amazing because it reveals the beauty of the wood, you can set out to make something in particular but quickly discover that the wood wants to be a certain shape and you end up with something totally different from what you set out to make but that just makes it better.
I started woodturning after seeing some YouTube videos, before then I thought woodturning was literally turning wood which seemed a strange thing to do. Basically I attach a nice piece to the lathe and use a range of chisels and gouges to shape the wood into something. Sometimes its a practical object, others its just ornamental. Half of the work is the finishing process, that means the sanding and the product I put onto the wood. The products I like to use are a sanding sealer to close up the grain and then either a food safe oil or Carnauba wax to bring out the shine!
You might see some things that aren’t woodturned, in those cases they will be items that have been requested, or things I just felt the need to make at the time!
All my products are vegan, I don't use Shellac or animal waxes. I have a little pug (pig) called Penny, she supervises me when I'm working to make sure I'm working hard and reminds me when its lunch time. All my pieces are made at home in my workshop. The wood is mostly bought locally from a tree surgeon but if I see something really unusual I have been known to travel to get it!
