Designer Makers in Clay and Metal

Lorraine Bates, Woodsetton Art Pottery

Lorraine Bates is the designer maker of Woodsetton Art Pottery based in the Black Country village of the same name. Lorraine gained her first degree from Bath Academy of Art in Corsham were she specialised in building oil and wood fired salt kilns before working in the pottery industry in Stoke for eight years.

Lorraine throws, casts or hand builds the stoneware and porcelain pieces, and coming from a family of pewter designers, she also makes the metal components featured in many of them. Pieces are always of use and show her special interest in the development of the rich reactive glazes, which flow during the complex firings. The initial inspiration for combining materials and this way of working came from The Ruskin Pottery, a local pioneering company in the Arts and Crafts era.

As well as making one off gallery pieces and ranges of smaller useful pieces Lorraine has regularly designed multi award winning commissioned ranges for Museum and Art Galleries in the UK, Europe and America. These have included The Victoria and Albert Museum, Kelmscott Manor; the home of William Morris, The Mary Rose Museum, Cosford Aerospace Museum, Musea Brugges, The National Trust, and English Heritage. She is currently working on designs inspired by Keswick School of Industrial Arts for Keswick Museum and Art Gallery.
