About The Herbal Flock

The Herbal Flock

'By hand from ewe to you'

About
The flock came to me in a serendipitous way. I was helping a friend with her market garden when a mutal friend got in touch. ‘I’m moving to Scotland and I need a good home for my Shetland sheep’ With around 5 acres of grazing available at the garden we decided to go for it.
Now, coming up to 3 years later and with a grazing agreement on some more rented land, I have an established flock of mostly pedigree Shetland ewes and offspring. From the start I knew that Shetland fleece was one of the best to have, being beautifully soft and coming in a range of lovely natural colours, and I was naturally reluctant to send it off to the wool board for little or no return. So, we have learned to shear, wash, card, felt and spin this amazing renewable resource, and are constantly amazed at how versatile it is. Being soft it can be worn next to the skin without irritation, we have made hats, scarves, gloves and slippers all of which are beautifully warm and a joy to wear. We have developed our wet felting technique and needle felting, to make a range of items, both functional and decorative which over time will become available to you on our Folksy shop or at craft shows in Sussex.
And the herbal bit? I’ve always gardened and treated my animals and family with as few chemicals as possible. Having the flock concentrated my mind even more and I started delving deeper into the use of herbs to support health. Like many interesting subjects, once you really start to look you soon discover that there is more to learn than you could have possibly imagined! So I have become a student of herbal medicine, studying the subject in depth and aiming eventually to become a qualified practitioner in Western Herbal Medicine. Meanwhile, I’m using my ever growing knowledge to support the health of my flock, my pets and my family and friends (not necessarily in that order), and herbs will also be featuring for sale on this Folksy site.
Our ethos is to use home grown and natural renewable materials to make useful or beautiful items by hand with real care and with no waste.
