I worked as a t-shirt printer in a GOTS (Global Organic Textiles) certified silkscreen studio in Amsterdam for 6 years. People would often ask me for workshops to teach them how to silkscreen, which I did! But I always thought it was a shame that the process took such a long time that they could only have time to print one of their many designs.
Part of the work at the print shop was to make 'transfers', which are usually the small prints that say the size inside the neck of the shirt, these would then be heat pressed onto the garment. I started to experiment with printing pages of colour, then texture, then i held workshops where the participant would cut and collage their designs right onto the shirt. This was a lot more experimental, using shape and colour, and a lot less confined to just one design. Participants could make anything from 1 to 10 different shirts in a 2 hr workshop.
Since the pandemic, obviously holding workshops has not been possible, so instead I started making the Easy T-shirt Printing DIY kits as a take home version of the workshops where you get a variety (20 or 12) of colours and textures which can be ironed onto fabrics while you watch the telly.
I missed the UK a lot and have since moved back to get a proper cup of tea and Sunday dinner.
