I was a qualified dog groomer with many years of animal husbandry (horses, llamas, catteries, you name it). I always wanted to work with animals, and have a lot of experience here. It was about 10 years ago that I started showing my poodles, and it was then that I started looking at dogs differently. How beautiful they are, when they move, strike a pose, or just being silly. But I also realised that dog groomers and exhibitors need stuff that reflects who they are and what they're all about - branding essentially.
During lockdown I realised that dog grooming was becoming too painful for my body but I spent a lot of time at the sewing machine and it felt like the right time to make a change. So I created several prototypes - suit bags, brush/lead bags, hold-alls, and so forth. What really sells well for me is trolley covers (if you're a dog show exhibitor you know what that is - but for anyone else - it's a huge bag that covers the cage that the dogs sleep in between getting to the venue and show time!)
I try to find innovative ways to tell the dog/exhibitor story with unique colours and designs. I want people to see a bag and know it came from me, but no two are alike.
But it's not just dogs that inspire me. I've got a real love for gardening, the natural world, other animals..
Sometimes that's expressed with my quilts - and the quilts have been anywhere from California King size to pot holders. Stay tuned because I'll be adding these as time goes on.
I've also more recently started doing bespoke embroidery on garments - so I might start sharing some of those ideas here.
People ask me all the time what I do. It's hard to sum up in one word or a fancy title. I'm more than a bag maker. I'm more than a quilter. I'm not a seamstress. I just make stuff. Hence the name, Sew What!
