Hi, I’m Rachel. I make jewellery in fine and sterling silver. Each piece is individually formed, filed, sanded and polished by me in my home workshop in Wiltshire.
Some years ago, I watched a silversmith at work whilst visiting the Scottish island of Iona. I found it fascinating to watch them saw, hammer and shape the metal into beautiful things and I wished I could learn how! After having my children, I went back to college to learn beaded jewellery design, but I still really wanted to work with precious metal. In 2020 I finally set up my own workbench and began my own silversmithing journey. I am largely self taught, and have also taken classes with a local silversmith to broaden my skills.
The inspiration for my work comes from the natural landscape near my home in North Wiltshire, as well as the beautiful coastlines of Pembrokeshire (where my grandparents lived) and Ayrshire (where my husband is from). Always a gatherer of natural treasures, I use leaves and other small natural objects in my designs, making moulds or taking imprints to capture their intricate textures.
Creating in a sustainable way is important to me. My jewellery is made using recycled fine and sterling silver. I make many of my pieces using silver precious metal clay: a material made of fine silver particles, a non-toxic organic binder and water. It can be moulded and shaped just like traditional clay. When fired, the binder burns away to leave solid silver. It is a great eco-friendly material, as the silver particles in the clay are recycled (reclaimed from industry and refined for purity).
Thank you for taking the time to have a look at Rachel Zilpha Jewellery. If you've any questions do send me a message via the contact button at the top of this page or take a look at my Instagram page to see behind the scenes.

A NOTE ABOUT HALLMARKING:
Please note that all of the silver items you currently see in my shop do not legally require or bear a hallmark as they weigh less than 7.78g. By UK law, all silver items weighing over 7.78g must be hallmarked by one of the four UK assay offices. Items weighing less than this are exempt. It is a requirement that I display the hallmarking notice (see photo above). I am registered with the London Assay Office and you can visit their website for more information: www.assayofficelondon.co.uk
