QuickClawz is designed to help dog groomers, pet professionals and owners safely and confidently learn how to trim a dog’s nails, addressing one of the most common challenges in pet care. By providing a realistic training experience, QuickClawz allows users to perfect their technique before working on a real pet, reducing stress for both dogs and their handlers.
Hazel Patterson, the creator of QuickClawz in conjunction with D2M - Design to Manufacture, introduced the product to the pet industry during a ten-minute pitch at the Business of Pets Conference, where it received enthusiastic feedback from industry professionals. Hazel was a Podiatrist with NHS Scotland for almost 20 years before retraining to become a dog groomer so she is no stranger to feet. Hazel now runs a Dog Grooming business in Ayrshire, Scotland called Muddy Paws Express Dog Wash & Grooming Service
“Many pet professionals and owners struggle with nail trimming, which can lead to stress and even injuries,” said Hazel. “QuickClawz offers a safe, hands-on way to build confidence and skill, making nail care easier and safer for everyone involved.”
Hazel initially attempted to raise funds for tooling costs through a Kickstarter campaign but then decided to change to 3D printing instead.
"At first I didn't think 3D printing would be robust enough for the repeated handling of QuickClawz, said Hazel ." I was then introduced to Petg filament by the genius inventors of Pawfect Grip dryer handles who then showed me the vast array of filament colours and strengths available. All QuickClawz models will be made to order and available in a variety of colours. This is something that wouldn't have been possible with mass tooling "
QuickClawz models will be available in a right or left paw with detatchable clear claws and black claws containing a 3d printed 'Quick - blood vessel'. The curly claws and normal claws are interchangeable on a specially designed peg on the toe. This allows the user to practice on all curly claws or a mixture of clear and black claws. My aim is really for the user to gain confidence on the clear claws to start with before progressing to the black claws. The claws can be cut, filed and / or dremelled.
Each QuickClawz model will include 20 claws. Claws will then be available to purchase separately. The model is designed to store things neatly such as claws, clippers, files etc. It has a non slip base.
There are two height settings. The lowest setting with the claws on will demonstrate that the claws are touching the ground and therefore are too long. There should be enough ground clearance to be able to slide a business card or bank card underneath the claws. The higher position allows for cutting from the front or behind. A diagram will be included with the model.
Hazel recommends making the first cut from behind and getting into the habit of taking small slivers until you see the quick - dot.
That is usually sufficient for most dogs as they should be wearing their claws down naturally themselves. If a dog's claws have been long for some time then the quick will also be long. In this case you will need to learn to make an alternative cut line to recede the quick and learn to whittle away the side casing of the claw. Think of the quick like the lead in a pencil so it would be like shaving a pencil before sharpeners were invented.
Hazel will be including instructions with the models and setting up an online support community for advice and tips - More to follow
