About Patterns of Light

Patterns of Light

Artist and maker, inspired by my Teuchter life in the Highlands of Scotland.

I was born in the deep south of Englandshire, and always had a love of anything art related. My grandmother sat me down with some watercolours at a very young age to keep me quiet one day....and that was when I first started to paint!

As a child my parents always brought me to Scotland for our holidays, so from a very young age (as long as I can remember) I had a love of the mountains and sea lochs of the Highlands. In 1993, fate intervened, and we moved to a village in Wester Ross called Lochcarron. I grew up in a warm and friendly community, and have to this day never wanted to live anywhere else. I dabbled in various crafts as I grew up, and would paint on and off, but I had a love of music also.....and so my school studies took me in that direction.

I never felt a desire to be anywhere but here, and after I got my first wee home in Kishorn, I regularly spent time with my friend Jenny in her shop - Patterns of Light. Sadly Jenny became ill, and in November 2012 she passed away. She had been a great inspiration to me, and I loved her art. Once again fate intervened.....and her husband sold me the business in 2014. I took on my own little gift shop and gallery, and a working studio where I could create. Although not formerly trained, I have spent the last few years developing my artwork. I discovered a love for acrylics, and a few years ago I started painting on pebbles and slates (the idea being it was a smaller/easier way for people to take art home with them). I also love working with watercolour inks and mixed media, and more recently have been mostly inspired by the coast and the sea I live beside, and the beautiful wildlife that visits us here.

I now live on the Applecross peninsula, between Shieldaig and Applecross, in a beautiful isolated spot. As of June 2020, I have moved my business home with me to Arrina. My husband had built his house here, and hopefully at some point in the future we will be able to build a small studio out here for me too. Life is currently filled by our beautiful little boy who joined us in March 2021.

You will find me as a stallholder at local art fairs in Torridon, Plockton, and Dornie throughout the summer. Please check out my Facebook page, Instagram, and website for updates on when I have a space you can come and visit - and I hope I will be seeing you soon :)
