I create unique objects and jewellery from a combination of metals including silver, copper and brass.
Here in my Folksy shop you will find a range of copper and brass bowls with patinated and oxidised finishes and a small range of jewellery created using recycled silver offcuts from my larger projects.
I am happy to take on commissions so please don't hesitate to get in touch.
I can also adapt my designs if you want something bigger or smaller or with a different finish. I am passionate about making things in metal and particularly using traditional hammer forming techniques.

Hello I am Melissa Montague, I'm a metalsmith based in the lovely city of Sheffield and I design and make everything you see here in my folksy shop.
I create unique objects and jewellery from a combination of metals including silver, copper and brass.

I first started making jewellery when I was about 11 and my mum used to take me to the local bead shop in Lincoln, where I grew up. I would carefully select beads and wires to create my own earrings. I always followed a creative path but at this time I was drawn to fashion and costume design, so went to art college in Lincoln when I finished school. It was here through doing a foundation course that I first discovered copper and the amazing colours you get when you heat it. One of my tutors always said she could see me doing jewellery design because my drawings were so tiny and detailed.
I remember going through the UCAS book (before the internet) at the local library to look for a jewellery and metalwork course that was far away from Lincoln. So I ended up in High Wycombe at Buckinghamshire Chilterns University College to do a BA hons designed Metalwork and Jewellery. This was where I discovered hammer raising and forging and began to create bigger objects, although half of my projects were still jewellery based. My interest has always been in the materials and techniques so there is a lot of crossover in my work.
After a few years away from making very much I moved to Sheffield in 2012 to do an MA in design at Sheffield Hallam University. Here I rediscovered all of the things I loved about working with metal and really began to make the work I wanted to. I have slowly built up a practice that includes making and exhibiting my work alongside teaching jewellery and craft classes at Studio Budgie Galore in Sheffield.

Best wishes
Melissa

Thank you for speedy despatch. I had not seen anything like this fashioning of brass as an earring before.

I bought a pair of silver stud mismatched earrings, they are lovely. Not too different in size or shape, but different enough to be noticed. They are very comfortable in my ears, and as always when buying from Melissa Montague Jewellery, they were beautifully wrapped, and posted quickly.

I love the oxidised finish on both pieces of jewellery. The earrings are very comfortable to wear, and like the necklace are tactile.Arived quickly, well wrapped.
