About Linda Chew Ceramics

Linda Chew Ceramics

I create one off ceramic pieces that are rich in patterns, textures and prints that are inspired by the environments in my garden and allotment.

I am a Fellow of the Craft Potters Association and have been working for over 45 years from my studio at home in Winchester, Hampshire, England.

After leaving Cheltenham College of Art where I studied ceramic sculpture, with James Campbell as my inspirational tutor, I worked in London for the sculptors Beth and Maurice Blik before gaining my teaching qualifications at The Institute of Education, London University where I was fortunate to have the renowned ceramist William Newland as my ceramics tutor. I went on to develop my practice whilst teaching in Winchester - a career which I found very rewarding.

A family tradition of sewing, a love of fabrics, textures and patterns and a passion for growing vegetables on my allotment has always been an inspiration for my work over the years.

Dishes, vessels and vases are thrown on the wheel or constructed from soft slabs of porcelain and stoneware clays .
Using a variety of techniques, the pieces are enhanced with resists, coloured slips, oxides and glazes in a palette of blues and greens.
A discipline of drawing everyday, screen printing and block printing also feeds my inspiration in clay.

All work is fired in an electric kiln to 1240c
