Welcome to Krafty Koffeedoff. Behind the name is Grainne Carson Clegg (Me) a printmaker who utilises stories told by my Grandfather, local mythologies and childhood memories as a place to explore ideas for my work
My Grandfather used to love inventing stories and retelling them every time he had ears to listen. One of my favourites and probably the one that was most often told was of a character by the name of Koffeedoff (hence the name I've chosen for this shop).
This was his tale:
Koffeedoff had a very bad cough
A very bad cough had he
But he got well
When he got the smell
From the top of the Lollipop Tree
I imagined an image of a jovial, rotund gentleman who acts as a mischievious symbol of the people and places that we all recall from when we were young. Although Koffeedoff doesn’t appear in all of my work, it is in this spirit – with a desire to connect the present and the past – that the work is made. The tradition of craft, which passes on skills and information from one generation to the next, is connected to familial ties, a sense of home and the act of story-telling.
