Handspun newspaper yarn designs

Thank you for stopping by my page. I am Bibi, a designer-maker in Birmingham, West Midlands living with long-term mental health and physical health difficulties.

This shop has been set up as a social enterprise to generate funds and opportunities for survivors of sexual violence. "GoodNewsFromBad" has been nurtured by a local therapeutic crafts group based at the Rape and Sexual Violence Project and I plan to now let it grow and thrive under the social enterprise GINA, which works in close partnership with RSVP.

In keeping with the theme of empowering and nurturing survivors to thrive, "Goodnewsfrombad" is all about recovery, hope and transforming old stories (particularly difficult bad news stories) into new ones.

The newspaper yarn I make is carefully handspun from hand cut, thin strips of newspaper. I have tried spindles/shredders, but I find that using my fingers helps keep the yarn fine as possible as well as allowing me more control over the colours and textures produced. I also think there is something important about knowing the newspaper has physically passed through the hands of the maker, which transforms the bad news stories and makes them a part of your stories as you send them to your friends and family.

My drawings and photography are also based around the theme of hope, recovery, change and re-writing old stories. The drawings in particular are inspired by my personal recovery journey of trying to find meaning and a life that is hopeful through therapy, ideas, mindfulness meditation and self compassion practice.

The photography is mainly inspired by the practice of nurturing gratitude and noticing beauty to help build resilience in adversity. I often take photos as "stepping stones" to get me to appointments, or through windows when I feel unable to leave my home. Some of my favourite photographs have been taken in urban environments, next to busy roads or in overgrown gardens, though you might not guess that from the photos themselves!

All support in the form of clicks, likes, shares, favourites, tweets, comments, feedback and visiting us on social media are very much appreciated.
