My name is Anna Donovan, I'm an artist living and working in Belfast, N. Ireland.
When I was at art college ceramics and jewellery were both strong contenders for my undivided attention. In the end circumstances guided me to a degree in ceramics, but my interest in jewellery has never quite gone.
After graduating with a degree in Ceramics and a bit of travelling, I ended up working for over a decade as a prop master and scenic painter, and although I enjoyed the experience, the pull to create my own work was too strong to resist.
Eventually, after dabbling with painting, I got back to making with clay and fell deeply in love with the process all over again. That said, the experience of working in the theatre world has proved to be a strong influence on my ceramics. I focus on the human form, each figure imbued with character and personality and often in the middle of something such as strutting their stuff or scratching their bum.
Part of my artist practice is being a hoarder. However, there is a reason. If I don’t incorporate an object into a sculpture, I make moulds of them as well as textures I find interesting. Many of these objects have included some of old dolls of mine that I saved from a clear out at my mum’s house. This is what has led to ‘Dollface’ come into being as I realised the potential of what I had to hand.
I am very excited at the prospect of finally combining my sculpture with finally making jewellery and in a way that reflects my practice as a sculptor and my joy of making art that people can wear.
