I’m Caroline, a textile designer with a love of hand embroidery. I make hand embroidered “ditty” bags which are suitable to keep small treasures in or they make ideal project bags for knitting or sewing. Ditty bags were first used in the mid 19th century by sailors who kept little things in like their sewing kits. My great grandmother was well known for her use of a small bag to get her treasures in and her quirkiness has passed through the generations to her great great granddaughter.
I grew up in small village in North Yorkshire and spent most of my free time with my grandmothers and my mum who were avid sewers and I suspect that their creativity must have rubbed off on me. As well as being inspired by my grandmothers and mum my inspiration also comes from woodland walks with my hairy dog, watching the birds fly around my garden and childhood memories.
I think it is very important to be able to create something that everyone can afford which is well made. My aim is to produce products which are a little bit different from the usual; maybe a bit quirky but overall something that is affordable and beautiful. Handmade shouldn’t necessarily be regarded as a luxury but as an essential.
