Meet the maker Beth Foster

The Linen Cat offers a collection of textile designs ranging from softies to soft furnishings, with an emphasis on style and quality. I like the contrast of plain, natural fabrics, such as linen and wool against bright cotton prints and I’m a little bit in love with tweed. I design and make everything for The Linen Cat, in my studio, at my home, using the best quality materials.

Although I now live in Kent, I was born and raised in the fabulous Yorkshire Dales, surrounded by beautiful countryside, where my family still live on a working sheep farm. I spent most of my childhood outside, with my siblings; playing in woods, building dens and being forced to walk for many hours, usually up a big hill, in the rain, whilst totally inappropriately dressed. I also spent a lot of time with my Gran, who was a great influence, she introduced me to cross stitch, and along with my Mother, to sewing. She spend many hours with us walking in local woods, spotting nature with our 'Eye Spy' books and reading stories by great artists such as Racey Helps, Richard, Scarry and Molly Brett, all of who are partial to drawing animals in clothing. As a result, a lot of my influence comes from children’s illustrations and nature, resulting in designs with a simple, retro feel. As an adult I have a love of all things Scandinavian, which I also think is reflected in my work.

I started The Linen Cat after finding myself at home raising a family, having earlier completed a degree in Theatre Design, specialising in costume. It gives me a creative outlet and has become my passion; I aim to create beautiful gifts in limited stock and new ranges are added frequently, so do keep checking.
