Meet the maker Nicki MacRae

Hello! I’m Nicki MacRae, and I paint from my little studio squeezed into the eves of the family home, in the stunning Highlands of Scotland.

I work in variety of subject areas, abstract, whimsical, impressionistic as well as some more classical landscapes. I work mainly in acrylic and mixed media, and take a flexible and ‘loose’ approach to art which often sees me mixing media and swapping paintbrush for rags, chopsticks, fingers – anything to see through my vision.

I’m always learning, an see art as a lifelong challenge - a race with myself in which I aim to be always experimenting, always reinventing, always growing as an artist and as a person. I love colour and texture, layering, and finding new ways to bring light and luminosity into paintings.

I am really interested in emotion – painting feelings, and also creating an image which prompts an emotional response in the viewer. Even if I paint something seemingly less expressive, like a landscape or portrait, I never feel it’s complete unless it evokes a ‘feeling’ or has a certain ‘energy’ about it.

Thanks for visiting my Folksy store! I love to chat, so if there's anything you would like to know just drop me a line...
