Meet the maker Dawn Hulme

Hi, I'm Dawn Hulme and live in Bury with my husband and two young children. I work as a building surveyor during the day and really enjoy my work. However, crafting has been a passion of mine since a very young age and my earliest recollection is being given an embroidery kit for christmas - I just loved it!

Later in my teens I taught myself to knit from a book borrowed from the library and became hooked straight away! Shortly after that I recall my grandma (Elizabeth Collinge) trying to teach me how to crochet and I just couldn't grasp it - it looked so different to knitting and I just couldn't seem to understand what she was trying to explain. Again, many years later I taught myself to crochet! I never thought it possible to enjoy crocheting more than knitting (I just didn't want to be beaten by anything!) and was just surprised at the freedom that crocheting can give. Knitting pretty much involves a grid of stitches in rows, but crocheting allows freedom to decide where the next stitch can be placed - it's fantastic!

Another passion of mine has been my earrings - I just love them and have around 100 pairs of them!! So, much more recently I've started to make my own! This combines two passions - making things and wearing earrings! I much prefer to use natural materials when I can and this is the same whether I'm crocheting with cotton or making earrings from sterling silver and semi-precious stones.
