Meet the maker Ann Ross

I was born and grew up in Manchester. When I left school, I started a career in chemistry but I always retained an interest in art. All my life I have loved making things especially with a sewing machine. My science career brought me to Caithness about 24 years ago, where I work at the Dounreay Nuclear Establishment.

I love colour and form. I have been a quilter for many years and make mostly art quilts rather than traditional bed quilts.I came to glass fusing by accident; I saw a demo of a small pot used in the microwave to melt glass. The lovely dichroic glass made me excited beyond words. So I started off making pendants in my microwave but I soon wanted more and I did some training at Northlands Creative Glass. I invested in a real kiln and really began to learn. I started to sell at local markets and craft fairs in 2011. I never really set off to make my own business but making glass is very expensive so it has to be sold. By September 2013 I will be retired from the day job and my glass making will be a full time endeavour. Bring it on!
