Meet the maker Carina Campbell-Gedge
I could hear the muffled sniffs and the odd high-pitched whine coming from the strange creatures that surrounded the room. I tried to ignore them, perhaps hoping that if I denied their existence they would vanish somehow. But I knew they were real. As the assortment of animal-like chirps and tiny howls grew louder, it became obvious that they were closing in on me. I daren’t move. Light glistened off of their tiny eye balls. I could see there were hundreds of them now. Creeping, slithering, stalking amongst the shadows.
I closed my eyes tight to help myself pretend I was somewhere else, but it only heightened my senses. The noises were almost deafening to me now. Cackles and giggles filled the room as they approached from all sides. My muscles tightened as I braced myself for what might happen next.
Suddenly the flick of the light switch caused light to penetrate my eyelids. I looked around, startled and confused. My husband stood in the doorway staring back at me. “Are you alright?” He asked. “It was a bit dark in here.”
My head spun around the art studio. Where did they go? How did they retreat from the light so quickly?
Then I saw them. Images of the creatures that had been stalking me littered the room. I could see them depicted on bags, shoes, badges, hats, canvases…They appeared to have merged themselves onto my very possessions. Some of them seemed to have become painted clay replicas of themselves in order to disguise their true, living nature. Regardless, the danger to my safety appeared to be over, for now.
Remembering that my husband was still waiting for my answer, I turned back towards the doorway. “I’m fine thanks”, I replied. “I was, err… Just doing some thinking.”
“…I think I have a few things to sell on Folksy.”
