Meet the maker Stephen Rimmer

Stephen is a Manchester-based designer/maker of sculptural and functional wooden objects. He is interested in the natural beauty of wood and seeks inventive ways to bring out it's qualities in everyday items. For the majority of his work Stephen uses locally sourced wood and coloured paints to create a wide range of attractive and useful household objects from egg cups, toys, candle sticks and vessel forms to domestic and street furniture, as well as sculpture and public art. Many of his sculptural pieces are hand crafted from discarded or coppiced hardwoods such as ash and beech. Stephen often carves and scorches the wood with a blow torch before brushing away the carbon to leave a wonderfully tactile surface ready for the oiling process. His more functional products - that explore form, texture, colour and composition and include a range of egg cups, toys, candle sticks, benches and stools - are hand crafted from pine wood off-cuts usually sourced from local building sites and timber yards.
