I enjoy making artisanal products from sustainable natural materials. I’m inspired by traditional crafts to create quality products for everyday use. My move to Scotland eight years ago introduced me to new techniques and materials, and triggered a renewed interest in heritage and traditional skills.
Knitting, weaving, sewing, basket weaving, gardening and making preserves were essential skills for any crofter: to run the croft, to feed and clothe the family, and to earn welcome cash. Inspired by my Dutch rural childhood and recent holidays around Scotland, I’ve been applying these crafts in urban Edinburgh.
In 2014 a stroke severely changed my life. It was time to refocus, reflect, and find a new way forward. I found resolution in knitting, sewing and discovering basket weaving. On my blog (urbancrofter.scot) I share my enjoyment of creating purposeful and honest modern products. And like a traditional crofter I also sell some of my creations to supplement our family income.
