This is the perfect cover-up for your little princess, on a sunny day or as the temperature drops. Just pop it over her head - simple! No arms to wriggle with and no fidgety fastenings - just the very safe tassel tie at the front neck; safe because although you can adjust the neckline it does not go all the way round, so avoiding the risk of anything awful happening. Leaves her arms and hands completely free to continue playing, ice-cream eating, sandcastle building....

Size - the lowest point on the back is 38cm from the nape of the neck, so would probably suit a toddler although of course size doesn't really matter with this design.

100 percent acrylic with a totally impractical white edging, but that makes it ever so pretty! It should dry well too, the fabric being a bit like terry towelling (but much nicer). There is a fine metallic thread in the edging, which should be fine for little ones as it's a specific baby yarn.

Machine wash, tumble dry on a gentle setting.

As usual, I started with the yarn, which is a 1990s vintage boucle yarn. It is EXACTLY the same colour as a bracelet I had from Wicksteed Park as a small child; once a year someone in the village organised a coach trip out and it seemed like the whole village went. My souvenir of that day out was a cheap plastic bangle with sparkly bits in it (mirrored here by the metallic thread in the edging) which I adored.

The other highspot of the day at the park was the candy floss, sugary and vividly coloured with goodness knows what. This poncho won't rot your teeth or make you hyper though!

I started to knit, but I was unhappy with the swatches; they didn't make the most of the yarn or give it a nice drape, it was all coming out a bit too chunky. So I swapped to crochet and came up with a nice open stitch that drapes beautifully and won't be too hot.
