A modern take on a traditional lace pattern, this cushion cover is made of yarn from the machine-knitting industry, otherwise bound for the skip. Inspired by 1980s lingerie, the end product will suit any setting, from a modern home with neutral decor to a retro or antique -styled room with cosy colours and textures. The main body of the cushion cover is in a smooth stitch which makes it soft and cuddleable.

I am unsure of the yarn, I believe it to be mostly acrylic but there might be a hint of mohair in the lace applique section.

The cushion cover measures approx. 36cm square but because there is some give in the fabric, it will fit a cushion pad that is a bit bigger. Closes at the back with a simple row of buttons so it is easily removable for washing.

Machine-wash and tumble-dry on gentle cycles.

Remember the camisoles and French kickers of the 1980s? I do! I started by playing with the yarn until I found a scheme that pleased me. This selection instantly reminded me of that lovely 80s lingerie - the chocolate browns and rose pinks of the day.

I started to swatch some lace - the Old Shale stitch I settled on is one of my favourites, a very traditional Shetland lace pattern. As I worked, the memory of the 1980s undies got stronger and I felt that rather than all-over, the lace pattern worked best as an applique section, much like the insets and trimmings on that saucy underwear.

I found some flesh-coloured (ish, depending on who you are!) yarn to make the main body, done in a plain stocking stitch. Not only is the name "stocking" stitch appropriate to the theme, it makes for a lovely smooth background which is very strokeable, like a nice plump thigh with just a touch of luxurious lace!
