I originally made one of these for myself out of necessity, I had somehow lost my pincushion amongst my sewing desk so I wanted to have one that was usable (obviously) but also something that I wont be able to loose and could keep out on the desk all the time so I thought putting it in something heavy was probably a good idea! First thing I found was a Teacup and the rest is history...
