This is part of a series of sculptures called Core which explores human's relationship with the wood. Yarner Wood is on the edge of East Dartmoor and I was one of 10 artists participating in a sculpture trail as part of Devon Open Studios 2013

This abstract piece looks amazing with the sun shining through it and is perfect for hanging in a sunny window or in the garden as a hanging sculpture.
Three inch thick cross section of Douglas fir with the central core removed and a cast glass insert placed in the hole.
Blue, sea green, turquoise and turquoise recycled glass is has been crushed into fine powder and cast in my kiln into the shape of the wood removed from the middle of the trunk. I have separately sculpted an oak leaf motif, cast it in plaster, filled the mould with crushed glass and cast into a 3 dimensional acorn and leaf.
This sculpture was part of an art trail in Yarner Wood (Bovey Tracy, Devon) in September 2013 and is a one off piece of art work.
It has sturdy hooks to hang it from and is not nearly as heavy as it looks.
