This dainty necklace depicts the Bramble with a tiny spider’s web strung across it. The pendant measures 2.3cm by 1.7cm and is an original design based on my own photos and sketches. The bramble has been hand embroidered on a silk/cotton fabric using fine continuous filament silk thread and the frame has been hand made in fine 99.9% silver. The frame has been imprinted with a bramble leaf on the back and is hung on a 16” sterling silver curb chain.
The bramble is such a common site in our hedgerows and, although it can be considered a weed by gardeners, it is one of my favourite plants. It gives us beautiful blossoms in spring and summer and the blackberry is always one of the first signs of Autumn, my favourite time of year. It is one of the most famous of the ‘free foods’ and blackberry picking is such a tradition in our family resulting in plenty of blackberry and apple crumble and blackberry jelly.
In parts of Britain it was believed that many diseases could be cured by walking under an arch of bramble that was rooted at both ends. Bramble would also be twisted together with rowan and ivy and hung over the door to protect from witches and evil spirits.
It has always been considered unlucky to pick and eat blackberries after Michaelmas Day 11th October). It was believed that when the Devil was cast out of heaven he fell into a bramble bush and spat on the blackberries.
