Baumstamm-Nikolaus are a traditional Bavarian decoration and are usually placed outside the front door in December to welcome St Nikolaus (who is a bit like our Santa Claus). The tradition goes that if you don't have a Baumstamm-Nikolaus, St Nikolaus may well pass by your house without leaving any presents.

Each Baumstamm-Nikolaus is made in our Malvern Hills base using wood coppiced by our neighbour Phil, from the woodland reserve he looks after. Each Baumstamm-Nikolaus has been hand-painted using water-based exterior paints. As a result Nikolaus can happily stand outside but also looks great stood inside by the Christmas tree or anywhere else around the home.

These are natural products and as a result all Baumstamm-Nikolaus's are individual and will differ slightly from the photos here.

There are two sizes available. This large sized Baumstamm-Nikolaus varies in size but ranges from between 42 cm to 50 cm high and between 9.5 cm to 12.5 cm in diameter. See separate listing for standard sized version.

A couple of years ago I was visiting a friend in Bavaria in the run up to Christmas. We went for a walk around some 'picture-postcard' villages in the shadow of the Bavarian Alps and I noticed that a number of houses had outside them a wooden log onto which had been painted the face of what i took to be Santa Claus. I found out from my friend that these decorations are left outside to encourage the German St Nikolaus to leave Christmas presents for the children of the house.

I liked their gnarled, cheerful qualities and I made some for our home. Friends liked them and soon I was making little armies of Baumstamm-Nikolaus. I have now 'branched out' (sorry, I couldn't resist the pun) to offer their cheeky rustic charm to Folksy too.
