Full description
I used a natural linen fabric as the base layer for this project. Using a pre-drawn template I cut it out, and then interfaced it. I cut out a range of different fabrics including vintage lace, printed organza and other vintage fabrics. Some of the fabrics had been hand-dyed and had former lives as armchair covers, doilies or tray cloths. I selected the image which had been printed on linen. The image is called 'Flower' by the artist A. Mucha (1897). All the fabric pieces were then arranged on to the natural linen base.
Each element was then machined stitched using zig zag stitch. After all the stitching had been completed, I then added some hand stitching and a nine vintage cream buttons and three guipure lace flowers. Once this had been completed, I bound the cover to the hardback book. When doing this, I made two pockets for putting photographs or other ephemera in, one at the front and one at the back of the book.
This A4 journal or sketchbook would make an excellent gift. It is something that someone could treasure for many years to come. It has been handcrafted to a high standard.
Measurements: The book is A4 portrait with 60 plain sheets of paper, 140gsm.
