Item details
Pazuzu is iconic. There aren’t many obscure Mesopotamian deities that would be widely recognised in our 21st Century culture just from their silhouette. I find him fascinating because the facts and the fiction are so contradictory.
Images of Pazuzu were a popular subject for Assyrian art for hundreds of years. Statuettes and amulets made from bronze, terracotta, or semiprecious stones, were widespread. These were practical items, often hung around the neck or placed around the homes or ordinary people. They were used to protect the sick, and were particularly associated with pregnancy and nursing mothers.
Pazuzu is also a wind spirit, a ferocious force of nature, associated with bringing harm to crops and livestock. For many years he was believed to be the hot south westerly wind, due to a mistranslation of a Sumerian incantation in the 1870’s. It is now believed that he was actually the cold north easterly wind of winter.
