I wanted to make some fat and appealing Christmas robins and was inspired to get on with them when I found some lovely fabric with a for their backs, brilliant for feathers.

I made my own pattern using magazine cover, taped together and stuffed with paper towel. Magazine covers have the right oomph for trimming and fitting and holding their own! With a bit of cutting and snipping this prototype became a paper pattern and I could get sewing!

Once made, and given its bright beady eyes, the robins seemed to take on a character of their own so that deciding which outfit to dress each one in was easy. I hope you like them!

Full description

Shown on the right - smart button robin decoration, with waistcoat robin on the left.

All ready to leave the nest and fly to new homes (except for Ethelred, who is not sure), our brave button robins are looking as ready for take off with bright beady eyes and little vintage buttons at the front of their chests. Are you ready to adopt a robin?

Our current crowded nest includes button robins Walter, Harold, Cedric, Robert & Ethelred the Unready; waistcoat robins Theo, Marcus, Eric and Toady; ribbon robins Edna, Edith, Bea, Evangeline and Bernard and scarf robins Chris, Fergus, Laura, Jelly and Muriel. Each robin comes with a tiny adoption certificate. If you have a hankering for a robin with a special name, let us know and we can christen one specially when the next eggs hatch.

The robins are 7-8cm tall, made of sturdy calico or linen and felt and decorated with buttons, beads and fabric. Each robin is sturdily built but they are decorations and not toys.
