Full description
I have never carved Jelutong before and I was intrigued by the wood and where it came from. If you have ever seen wooden clogs, chewed chewing gum, visited Penang, you may have had a brush with Jelutong, yet the name of the tree is not well known to us.
Jelutong is a tall tropical hardwood tree that grows in Malaysia, Borneo and Sumatra. It grows rapidly and has many commercial timber uses, but it is equally used for its by product latex.
The wood has very little grain pattern that distinguishes it or makes it ornate; this however makes the features of the carving stand on their own in form and shape.
The wood was an off cut of a larger piece destined for a carved rocking horse head.
The hair is constructed from wire off cuts used in flower arranging, coiled, stretched and individually applied. It will rust over time to a red brown colour adding a new dimension to the carving.
He is 14" tall and 3 1/2" in diameter at the base.
The back is covered in Futhark Runes which when translated has a meaning that can be found on the Woodwose Blog if you cut and paste this address into the internet search bar:

The piece is varnished and would be suitable for either the garden or the home. As with my other carvings it would be better not to allow the piece to sit in water or directly onto the soil.
