Full description
This is a platter/shallow bowl made from an alder burr.
The piece of burr was from my father’s farm. The tree was cut down by my brother to coppice the edge of the river bank. When we were sawing and clearing the area I spotted this growth on the tree and I couldn't wait to see what the grain was like inside.
I dried the timber over a number of years in my workshop to make sure it was stable before turning it into this platter.
The piece is approximately 190mm in diameter, stands 40mm tall and is around 15mm thick.
It's a simple shape which allows the beautiful pattern of the grain to show through, and the natural deep ocra type colour with a couple of darker barked areas on the outside.
The finish is walnut oil.
