Meet the maker John Doyle

I ran a weekly electronics club at school for many years before I retired from teaching in 2014. I enjoyed developing projects for this club and concentrated on the practical skills of circuit construction. Children enjoyed making the circuits (especially if they worked first time!) and they usually wanted to make another one.

All of the kits from Irby Electronics originated from my experiences of running this club. The kits are designed for beginners aged 8 years and upwards who are interested in starting to explore the world of electronics.

Circuits from Irby Electronics are constructed on either foam board (soldering not essential) or on track board (soldering essential). In my opinion, this type of construction makes it easier for beginners to follow a circuit diagram compared with trying to follow a circuit diagram on a printed circuit board.

The completion of a project is intended to be both challenging and enjoyable. An understanding of how each component in a circuit behaves is not essential at this level but if a component is connected the wrong way around or soldered into the wrong position on track board then the circuit is unlikely to work. Please read through the instruction sheets supplied with each kit very carefully.

All practical activities involve a certain amount of risk but risk can be minimised and a safety guidance sheet is included with each kit. Please be aware that there are small parts in each kit, some with points, which are NOT suitable for children under 8 years. Children aged 8 years or above should be supervised by an adult.
