Michael Ashlar Jewellery

Sterling and fine silver jewellery, made by a retired engineer. Something to keep the making part of my brain happy.

I worked in mechanical engineering for 47 years, when I retired I didn't miss going to work but I did miss the creative part of my job. I've always admired nice jewellery and so I decided I would have a go at making some. Initially for family and friends but it soon turned into something I enjoyed very much and their jewellery boxes were overflowing. So now I make pieces which I hope to sell via Folksy, as well as the occasional craft fair.

Inspiration comes from books, pieces I see in jewellery shops and on the internet. My wife some times says "can you make something like this?" and draws me a little sketch. Sometimes I can't because they are impossible, but sometimes I can and it goes from there. Very occasionally things just pop into my head.

Most of my work I do in the study at home but when I have to solder anything, that's done in the garage. Materials are sterling and fine silver sheet, wire and tube. Most pieces also involve silver soldering and some straight forward stone setting. Stones are natural semi precious, as well as synthetic ones like cubic zirconia (CZ). Occasionally I make pieces from silver clay, which when fired turns into fine silver, a very different technique from normal but still enjoyable.
