godessa Jewellery

Contemporary silver jewellery inspired by women from the past

Hello, my name is Laura and I am the designer and silversmith behind godessa Jewellery. I founded godessa two years ago and my workshop is based in Resort Studios, which is in Margate, on the south east coast of Kent.

My inspiration for godessa comes from the lost or hidden voices of women from history. Growing up I spent a lot of time feeling very frustrated about the invisibility and rarity of women's voices in any kind history. When I started silversmithing these ideas about women's invisibility came back to me, but instead of feeling frustrated I decided to turn it into something positive. I started thinking about how I could honour all those women who have gone before us, who are just as an important part of our history. So I looked for the traces of female voices, trying to go back as far as I could and it was the voices of the goddesses that emerged strong. For me the goddesses are a powerful female symbol and one that still has a lot of resonance today.

Each goddess has their own characteristics and symbols and it was fascinating to research and be creative with all the history that surrounds them. From the goddesses I have started looking at a number of female figures from the past and my latest collection is based on Nefertiti, an Ancient Egyptian queen.

What I love most about making jewellery is knowing how it becomes a part of an individual's story, carrying memories and sentiments that go far beyond being just a beautiful object. godessa pieces start out with their own history and meaning, which I hope enriches the meanings that they go onto have with their new owners.
