About booktides

Unique hand-bound books made just for you. Get carried away on the booktide...

Books and me - it was love at first sight. Reading them, writing in them, we were always a match!

My first bookbinding project was a raggedly made book held together with sellotape, in which I wrote all the things that made my seven-year-old self happy. The way books were made was a mystery to me then. A few decades & bookbinding courses later, I began making books in my bedroom & was delighted when people bought them! As the business grew, so did the materials and equipment, until I was forced to admit I could no longer see the bed! It was time to get a dedicated studio for what had now become a family business.

Bookbinding is an ancient art and I like to reference that with "olde worlde" touches while adding some modern twists, such as printing photos on bookcloth for baby albums & coming up with new designs for books such as our satchel journals. There was a gap in the market for simple, elegant guestbooks and albums and this has set the style for all the books we now make. As we're based in Edinburgh, Scotland, tweed and tartan covered books were also a must and we take great delight in sourcing customers' family tartans for their special books.

It's so wonderful when a customer shares a special story of how they're going to use their book - for remembrance, celebration, or new beginnings - it's a privilege to play a small part in others' lives. Whether it's a one-off book for an individual, or a wholesale order for a retail store or 200 tweed books for the Scottish government, each project is given the personal touch.

Books have always made me happy and it is a great joy to know my books are now bringing a little happiness to others too.
