About The Brambly Hedgepig

The Brambly Hedgepig

I love to make things, grow things, bake things and take care of things.

I have been a crafter and a lover of the natural world since I was a child growing up in a little village in Fife, crawling through the woods to gather blaeberries and bake them into cakes or hiding behind my bed weaving a surprise quilt for the new baby. Now I am an education officer with the Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire Wildlife Trust and spend much of my time outdoors on a nature reserve helping school groups discover the mysteries deep in the pond or making pictures with leaves. I run an outdoor toddler group where I delight in sharing the joy of nature with young children and their carers, and indulge my passion for creating all natural sensory play materials - from gooey dinosaur swamps to rice rainbows and herb scented playdoughs.

Making things for friends and family I have dabbled in all sorts of crafts from cards and mermaid tail blankets to wedding cakes (do they count as craft?) and Christmas decorations, but increasingly my focus is on nature inspired items made with natural or recycled materials. I spend hours in my Oxford garden weaving willow, spindle, dogwood and bramble (yes I take the thorns off first!) into baskets and planters, festive wreaths and the occasional magic wand. On the many train journeys back to visit my family in beautiful Scotland I have perfected my needle felting, making tiny animals to sell at the village Christmas market, and making almost as many holes in my fingers as the scenery draws my eyes away from the viciously barbed needle!

Since the beginning of 2019 I have had a new crafting inspiration. My partner and I started fostering cats for the RSPCA, providing a warm loving home to help them transition from being rescued or spending time in a cattery to their new forever homes. Millie, pictured above, spent several months with us and we became great friends. At 12 years old she took a little while to find her new home but I'm glad to say she is very happily settled there now. All our cats need to play and exercise and that was the inspiration for my needle felted mice. Made from natural sheep wool with a faint, delicious whiff of lanolin left in it, they have been a great hit with all our cats, and they always take one with them to ease the transition to their their new home.

The Brambly Hedgepig shop reflects my interests and passions from planet friendly, child friendly sensory play materials to beautiful, fun items of use or ornament made in ways and with materials that don't cost the earth. A donation from each sale in the shop is made to the Berkshire Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire Wildlife Trust to support the fantastic work they do locally protecting and campaigning for wildlife, and educating people about the amazing organisms we share the UK with. Man is part of the natural ecosystem, and I hope we can learn to find a place in it for ourselves that allows us to live in harmony with nature.
