Soft Pastel and Pencil Pastel Artwork

It's the 70's.....my love of art and textiles began when as I child I used to 'make' from my mothers sewing scrap box. My mum is an 'expert' amateur dress maker, making bridesmaids dressers for friends and family, weird clothes for me and her (well it was the 70's!!) and ultimately my wedding dress. Apart from dressers she made toys, bags, hats, emu's (yes from Rod Hulls day!) all sorts.

My dad is a carpentry enthusiast. After being refused to get an apprenticeship from his father (need to bring in a wage boy!) he spent all of his life earning that wage from something he did not love and all of his free time crafting things from wood. He made anything and everything always creating his own pattern, cupboards, coffee tables, wendy houses, and children farm yard sets, he has a shed to die for and now in his 80's continues to 'turn his hand' to anything wood.

Initially I studied art and textiles at college. After marrying I also had those types of jobs that brought a reliable wage in, but it was during my 30's that I decided to retrain and went back to college and studied as a interior designer. After running my business for 5 years I found myself volunteering and then working at my local primary school, which was a job that worked beautifully around my young family. It was during this time that my arty side was put to good use, I worked at school for 9 years taking on all manner of art activities including running a children's art club and teaching art from the curriculum, whilst also undertaking a children's illustrators course with The London Art College.

Earlier this year we built a studio at home and I decided to take the plunge to leave my job at the school and concentrate on becoming a full time artist. Having consistently sold my artwork, which I had made in my spare time through local shops and word of mouth, I decided it was time to complete the dream and go for it.

So I work in my home studio which is stuffed full of fabric, ribbon, lace, trim, pencils, paints, paper you name it! It is artistry heaven. I'm accompanied by my two doodle dogs which help me to remember to stretch my legs every now and then. As well as pastel art I love to paint and work with textiles , I regularly take commissions for these mediums too. Please contact me if you are interested in my artwork or a commission or visit my website rtdesignsuk.com.
