I hand cut the leaf shapes using a piercing saw and file the edges to give nice clean lines and smooth edges. Finally, the leaves are domed slightly so that they catch the light nicely. The leaves measure approximately 27mm x 13mm and hang from sterling silver ear hooks. The dye is sealed in to the metal through heat so that it becomes a permanent part of the surface of the aluminium. I have cut out the strips of aluminium and bent them on a mandrel in to a half hooped shape earring. The hoops are attached to a sterling silver fish hook style ear fitting. The hoops measure approximately 5mm across and from the top of the aluminium hoop to the bottom it measures 21mm. Please note, due to the random nature of the pattern the stripes may vary slightly from the ones pictured but they are always in the traditional rainbow order. I hand cut the leaf shapes using a piercing saw and file the edges to give nice clean lines and smooth edges. Finally, the leaves are domed slightly so that they catch the light nicely. The leaves measure approximately 27mm x 13mm and hang from sterling silver ear hooks. I have hand dyed and printed an abstract pattern in a blue grey and silver on to some anodised aluminium, cut it by hand using a jeweller’s saw in to a mid-century style semi-circle and then mounted it on to a piece of aluminium. I then made some small turquoise circles from another piece of aluminium that I’d dyed and printed. The two pieces of metal are sandwiched together using hand made rivets which I’ve fed through the two turquoise circles before hammering them in to place. The semi-circle measure approximately 40mm x 24mm and hangs from two sturdy sterling silver jump rings which are connected to a strong sterling silver chain. The chain has two extra details, a small oval shape and semi-circle in the same pattern as the large semi-circle which are connected to the chain part way up. The chain length is 18” which can be extended to 19” with the attached extension chain. I have drawn out my moth design on to the aluminium and then saw pierced the shape and detailed patterns by hand using a jeweller’s saw. To add some colour I have attached a piece of hand dyed anodised aluminium which has a rainbow stripe design on it. It’s attached with four hand made rivets. Finally I file the edges and wire wool the surface to give a brushed metal look. The moth is attached to a sturdy sterling silver chain. The moth measures approximately 65mm x 32mm and hangs from a sterling silver chain. The necklace is 19” in length and can be extended to 20” with the extension chain. The dye is made permanent by sealing through heat and becomes part of the metal. I saw out the shell shapes by hand using a jeweller’s saw and dome them inwards so that they catch the light when worn. Aluminium can’t be soldered so the shell is fed on to a 3mm sterling silver ball stud which threads through the shell and when worn, holds the shell in place on the earlobe by pressure from the butterfly behind. The studs can be worn by themselves too. The shells measure approximately 15mm x 14mm. These are seconds because the print looks a bit uneven as shown in the photo. These are slight seconds because the print isn’t as clear as I’d like it to be.
