The surfite is a pastel minty aqua colour (one is bluer than the other) and has a swirly 'eye' at the bottom in darker shades of teal and green, they aren't an exact match but work well together. These dangle earrings measure 48mm (from top of the hook) by 19mm, surfite is lightweight so comfy to wear all day. Comes gift boxed. The surfite comes from Cornwall and is a build up of cured resin that forms during the glassing stage of surfboard manufacture making these earrings a great gift for a surfer. I cut this particular material myself and you can see the original block and a work in progress shot in the photos (the rough isn't included). Where the last drips of resin were falling into the bucket stalagmites were forming and then being surround by subsequent layers of resin. There is articulation between the stud top and main drop, the top section measures 9 x7mm diameter whilst the bottom drop is 27mm by 17mm, total drop is approx 42mm. Weird quirk for this material is that some times it changes colour over time, when I cut these drops a few months ago they didn't have any of the pale blue and they have been sat on my desk so I can watch it slowly happen. I think it has now stopped changing but you might find a few subtle changes in time. Bowlerite is the hard plastic recovered from 10 pin bowling balls when they are no longer fit for rolling down the lanes, this particular ball was a rich purple with silvery shimmer which catches the light so it must have been quite a sight as it headed towards the pins. The shape of the bail mimics the leaf like shape of the bowlerite and there is a generous loop at the back meaning the pendant could be threaded onto ribbon or velvet if you wanted to (it comes with a sterling silver snake chain). Bowlerite is the name given to the hard plastic recovered from the outside of old 10 pin bowling balls so this is a great bit of eco friendly recycling. This particular bowling ball was a hard to photograph shimmery red and navy swirl colour combo, its very striking as the light catches it (the reverse is grey which was the colour of the inner core of the ball). Bowlerite is the name given to the hard plastic recovered from the outsides of vintage bowling balls, this ball had a swirled colour palette of mid blue and black with gold shimmer and must have been quite a sight as it rolled down the lanes. The setting has an open back so you can see the different pattern on the back (that has much broader sweeps of gold shimmer), it should be possible to wear it so the back is facing out. Bowlerite is warm to the touch and lightweight whilst the leaf shape is very tactile for those that like to fiddle with their jewellery. Given its previous life as a 10 pin bowling ball this would make a great gift for a bowling fan (or a lover of The Big Lebowski). The fordite are a well matched pair with a finely striped pattern on a white ground, the most obvious of the stripes is yellow but there is also blue and red in there. The fordite moves freely on the hoop and the hoop moves freely in the hook so these earrings have lots of movement as well as an eye catching size (65mm drop, 32mm across). Fordite is the name given to the build up of paint in the spray booths at car factories. The paint gets cured in between each layer so it becomes rock hard allowing it to be cut and polished for use in jewellery. Surfite is waste resin build up from the surfboard industry and there is an interesting pattern where air bubbles in the black layer were burst and filled by the lilac resin. The surfite has stripes of blue, teal, black and red, some of the stripes are translucent so light bounces off the back of the setting. These studs measure about 13mm across making them quite a eye catching but surfite is lightweight so they won't be heavy in your lobes. Comes gift boxed. Surfite is a build up of cured resin that forms during surfboard manufacture making these earrings a great gift for a surfer. I cut this particular material myself from a slab of rough material that came from a workshop in California but I don't know which one. They are not a matching pair but were cut from the same piece of rough material so make sense as a pair. They measure about 12mm diameter and are lightweight. Comes in a gift box. Fordite is the name given to many layers of cured paint that builds up in spray booths at vehicle factories, the paint gets baked hard in between each layer leading to a durable material that can be cut to show off the many colours. I bought the rough this was cut from direct from a guy who worked at Ford's Wayne Assembly plant and this was formed when they were making Cmax and Focus cars between 2014-2018 (I could get nerdy about the triple layer paint system they were using being the reason for getting thicker stripes of colour compared to the grey primer but i think you're loosing interest so well done for reading this far). The amber studs are made with butterscotch amber which is an opaque warm yellow orange colour, if you look very closely you can see a slight swirl in the material but don't expect any fossils! The amber it's came from a retired Polish jeweller who had recovered the cabochons from his own work when he retired and scraped his unsold stock. The studs measure approx 9mm diameter with a fairly high dome of 5mm (don't worry they aren't heavy and could comfortably be worn all day). The studs are a free form organic oval shape and have a delicate violet / periwinkle / purple colour. The caboochons are rose cut (they have facets on the top surface with a flat bottom) for a bit of sparkle but the tanzanite is quite flawed and light bounces off these flaws as well creating an interesting rainbow effect in places. Because of the flaws I would recommend storing these earrings in the box they come in just to protect them from being knocked by anything else in your jewellery box. The chrysocolla is a mix of bluey greens, teals and deep dark brown, it showed evidence of cracks so I opted to stabilise it with resin rather than risk them breaking - the resin is visible on the back of the stones but not on the front - the stones were too beautiful to not use them and the combination of resin and setting hold them secure so they will last a life time. Charoite is mid lavender purple, not as dark as amethyst but not a wishy washy purple either, with a natural swirly pattern of internal crystal fibres which catch in the light to give a gentle shimmer effect, the top and bottom sections of the earring are articulated so they can move freely of each other. Its a very pretty alternative to amethyst for those purple fans out there. Both earrings have a triangular bolder opal and round white opal separated by a textured silver bar but for one of them the bolder opal is at the top whilst for the other the bolder opal is at the bottom. The top opal hides a post and scroll (stud) closure and there is articulation between each section. Opal is the birthstone for October so a great gift for a Libra but I'm sure any woman would love to receive these (they come gift boxed). Measure 54mm top to bottom and approx 9mm wide, the doublets measure 11 by 9mm whilst the round opals are 8mm in diameter. The bolder opals are doublets with a pale blue colour slice of opal attached to an iron stone backing (which is not visible thanks to the bezel setting), they have body colour but don't exhibit much in the way of fire. The white opals are solid opal with lots of fire in a rainbow of colours, I've tried to capture this in my photos but it is really hard. One of them has a tiny white fleck which I have also tried to show in a photo, this mark does not detract from the beauty of the opals or the earrings but I mention it for completeness. Chrysoprase is a minty green, fresh and vibrant but with a blue undertone, it's part of the chalcedony family of minerals. When the build up gets to a certain thickness it has to be removed and lapidarists discovered that it could be cut and polished to show off the multitude of colours. I believe this material came from Ford's Dearborn plant in Michigan, they produce rough fordite from around pipes which is referred to as 'Dearborn rollers', I haven't managed to match it to a specific year or model due to the limited colour palette but it is possibly the F-150 trucks. The surfite has a rosette eye type pattern in pastel shades on a dark maroon and green back ground. Some of the colours are transparent and light can reflect off the setting behind them. The cufflinks measure approx 20mm diameter and the tops are 4mm thick, they have a smooth flat top so they don't snag when being worn under a jacket. The surfite has stripes in shades of blue, grey and khaki, much more muted than I would normally pick out of the rough but some gents prefer a less showy cufflink. Some of the stripes are colourless and light can reflect off the back of the setting. Measure approx 18mm diameter and the tops are 7mm thick, they have a smooth flat top so they don't snag when being worn under a jacket and surfite is lightweight so they are not heavy in the cuff. The fordite has a white based colour palette with stripes of yellow, red, sparkly blue and green, the patterns almost match. These cufflinks would make the perfect gift for a gent who loves his classic cars, they measure 20mm by 12mm and approx 4mm deep. Comes in a gift box. Fordite is layers of cured car paint which builds up in the spray booths getting baked hard in between each colour. The unique colour palette in this particular material has allowed me to date it to 1970 from the Dodge production line - the rough I cut it from features some of the rare hi impact paint colours and you can see this and some of the other pieces I have made from it in the last photo (the rough and other items aren't included in the sale). Druzy is where the crystal points are on the surface (like a mini geode) so they catch the light and twinkle as the piece moves. The cloudy quartz has clear patches with creamy white bands and plumes in it and is the last of the druzy cabochons I bought whilst in Indonesia. This is a chunky pendant and has a pair of generous loops (6mm by 4mm) at the back of the setting (they are part way down the setting rather than at the very top), it comes with a sterling silver chain or you could slide it onto a ribbon or neckwire if you wanted to. Could be worn at any time but I think it would suit a vintage bride. Measures 40mm by 30mm and comes with a 16 in sterling silver snake chain in a gift box. The malachite has a slightly wavey pattern in the classic mid green tones but has been polished to a subtle sheen rather than the typical glossy finish (I recommend avoiding spraying it with perfume or cosmetics, I have waxed the malachite but they may stain it.). The malachite is mounted in the middle of a chain (its fixed so won't slide) with a total length of 18 inches plus 2 inch extender chain, the malachite is approx 1 inch across and 1 5/8 inches drop (25mm by 40mm). The elongated diamond shaped dendritic opal is pale grey at the top and white with little black tree like dendrites at the bottom, it has been rose cut (ie it has facets on the top surface) to give it a bit of sparkle. The dendritic opal is suspended beneath a black spinel (also rose cut) which hides the bail the chain passes through. The pendant measures 45 mm top to bottom and 14mm across, the opal measures 36mm by 14mm whilst the spinel is 6mm diameter round. The surfite is a deep purple, so dark it's almost black but not quite, but the darkness is lifted by a pastel 'rose' at the bottom. This marquise shaped pendant measures approx 56mm (inc bail) by 22mm, it comes with a sterling silver snake chain but the bail is large enough to fit a cord or thong if you wanted to swap it over. Once the bucket is full and cured the resultant block is normally thrown away but I managed to get Toy Factory Surfboards in Newquay to sell me one and took a saw to it! The ocean jasper is bezel set in sterling silver and is finished off with a simple loop bail and 18 in silver snake chain. The jasper switches from having a micro crystalline structure to more of a macro crystalline structure towards the bottom of the pendant and if you look closely you can see where the crystals mesh together (it is an open backed setting so you can hold it up to the light and see the crystal structure better). The oblong shape is gently round rather than sharply angular. Measures 52mm (inc bail) by 17mm and comes gift boxed. Ocean jasper comes from Madagascar and gets it's name from the fact that originally it could only be mined when the tide was out. The original seams of ocean jasper have now been mined out but due to the popularity of this stone prospectors are looking for more, until they find a new source it is becoming increasingly hard to find quality material with defined orbs like this has. (I originally trained as a chemist and occasionally stones cause the nerdy chemist to come out. Rhodochrosite is manganese carbonate and in its pure form its a bright rose pink translucent crystals. However some times the manganese is replaced with calcium as the mineral forms, calcium carbonate is white so where you get a mix of manganese and calcium you get a paler and more opaque shade of pink, the more calcium the paler it is). Psilomene looks black from a distance but as light plays over the surface a marbled pattern in metallic grey is revealed (think of it like a cross between malachite and haematite but it is a completely different mineral to either of these). Psilomene is sometimes known as crown of silver or psilomelane. This would be perfect for someone who likes dark and moody jewellery but wants a change from onyx, obsidian and haematite. Sieber agate isn't actually an agate, it is slag glass from an ancient copper smelting site in Germany that was active about 600 years ago. Impurities from the ore and traces of copper cause the blue and grey colour palette and it's industrial heritage causes the swirly pattern and little air bubbles/ dimples on the surface. It's unusual and sure to be a talking point. Spectrolite is related to labradorite and displays the same flashes of colour, for this piece the colour displays better in the landscape setting rather than portrait hense my decision to orientate it that way round. The colour flash rolls over the entire surface and is golden yellow with bright blue veins against a black ground. The flash of colours against the black reminds me of the northern lights against the midnight sky. Spectrolite is only found in one part of Finland where the mining season is fairly short due to the cold weather, I bought the rough that this cabochon was cut from whilst visiting Finland and then had it custom cut back in the UK. Shattuckite is a copper mineral with a turquoisey blue colour, in this particular piece it formed inside a void in some grey quartz giving contrast between the vibrant blues and the grey (reminds me of glimpses of sky blue in grey storm clouds). If you look really closely you can see traces of shattuckite's more famous pseudo morph malachite and flaws in the grey quartz. I think this would be the perfect gift for someone who is interested in unusual minerals and gemstones. The blue spots are a natural formation on the grey granite back ground, when it was first discovered people thought the dots were dyed but analysis showed that it is azurite.
