The art of paper beading is something I learned many years ago while living in North America. Making beads from paper is something many people can't get their heads round! How can you make durable beads from paper? Well you can, and I have bracelets and necklaces that I made years ago that are still going strong.
I'm living back in the UK now and still going strong with making paper beads.
How did I get into making tools and templates for paper bead making? Mainly through wanting to make the process quicker and easier for myself but also for when I was teaching workshops. I wanted to find ways to speed up the bead making process so people could take a finished piece of jewellery home with them.
There are ways to roll paper beads without a bead tool, some people use toothpicks/cocktail sticks but I always found that fiddly and so I began to experiment with making different tools. I went through a phase of using bamboo, but they were too weak to stand up to lots of use.
The handles I have now go back a long way but in more recent years, I found it was cheaper to use wooden dowelling and so I switched to that.
But it proved to be a false economy as the skinny handles with no shape can be hard for some people to hold and many (especially older people) were asking me for the old handles back because they are more comfortable to hold.
The templates I designed were orginally for my own use and also my classes, again to speed up making lots of bead strips. And as students were askiong if they could buy them, I decided to sell them online.
I have a YouTube channel called RainbowLane were I do craft tutorials and demonstrate how to use my paper bead products. You can find me on YouTube by going to my website where yuou will find links to it on most posts.
