Thank you for taking the time to read a little background to MeanderingWood. My name is David Carey and I started Meandering Wood Limited in late 2017. I might be described in life timeline terms as an 'autumn chicken' having previously been in the finance industry for over 40 years. I did no woodwork at school, did a few very rudimentary woodwork skills with my father but first came to woodworking in my 30's as a hobby after I had largely finished playing sports and I decided that golf was not for me! I did evening classes and learned a lot of very useful skills whilst making several things from coffee tables to a staircase (in ash) and a kitchen (in oak).

Having retired from the finance world, I was able to give my full time to the love of woodwork and at the same time decided that I would only work to green wood principles with hand tools and no machinery.

I have learned from others and learn something new every day, very much believing that the time when you think you know everything is the time to stop what you are doing. I make stools, bowls, tables, shrink pots, spoons and knives, pendants.....the list keeps growing. I love to split a log with an axe and see what lies within; so often, the grain of the wood splits in such a way as to offer quite beautiful colours or shapes in the wood. These often inspire what I next make.......I start the day with a plan but may well change the idea to suit better what the natural flows of the wood have given after the log has been opened up.

Producing a quality, lasting product is important to me and I am committed to doing whatever I say I will do which includes keeping Customers regularly advised of progress of their chosen piece.

For now, this shop has some of the smaller items I make yet I also undertake commissions for Customers which have included tables, stools, plates and spoons....all in wood. You can follow me on Facebook (@MeanderingWood) and the website, https://www.meanderingwood.co.uk

In the Summer, I still check the cricket scores whenever I have a break. Old habits die hard!!
