Mwnt in Ceredigion - a beautiful bay on a lovely day with plenty of flowering gorse bushes and the tiny white chuch below the hillside - composed of appliqued patches and hand embroidery, using my photos as a reference. Scraps of fabrics in shades of green, beige and blue, to represent sea, hillside, beach and sky have been hand stitched onto a thick felt background. The fabrics are either recycled or are offcuts from previous work - my scrap bag is extensive! Details of the design have been added in simple hand embroidery using threads (some of which are vintage) and vintage 3 ply wool. A panel of hand painted lace was hand stitched to the cover - cut from a portion of vintage sheeting painted to match the lace. The cover has been lightly quilted using white cotton thread to provide rows of quilting stitches, on either side of the lace panel and to add texture to the back of the cover and the 'spine' of the book. The cover is finished by an edging of blanket stitch in the same white thread. The needle book is lined in a green and cream vintage checked fabric. Two pieces of vintage soft flannelette are folded and securely stitched in place, to provide four 'pages' for your needles and pins. The needle case closes by a button hole stitch loop over a white button. Whilst I have tried to correct the first image, on my screen at least the paler flowers look more 'true blue' whereas they are actually more of a turquoise colour. Snippets of lace, fancy yarns and trimmings were used to embellish the patchwork. Hand embroidery completes the embellishment. The back of the patchwork has been neatened with a panel of white felt. A portion of one of my hand made 'snippet rolls' ( a snippet roll is a patchwork strip composed of fragments of fabric, lace, vintage linens, fancy yarns and hand embroidery) was the starting point for this cuff, which was assembled by hand. Whilst very pretty it was very time consuming to make and is unlikely to be repeated. A bookmark composed of lengths of yarn, felted to an eco felt background, and stitched to resemble woven cloth, trimmed by a tail of coordinating ribbons. Yarn snippets were hand felted to an 'eco' felt (commercially produced from recycled bottles) background - blue yarn alternating with the other colours featured in the blanket. Rows of small running stitches in cotton threads were then worked down the bookmark, Backstitching, in a fine blue thread, has securely anchored the 'weft threads' down each long edge of the bookmark. The background of this plaque has been created from machine appliqued strip patchwork on a plain fabric base. One of the strips is of printed flowers on a green background. These flowers have been replicated in hand embroidery on other 'meadow' stripes. The kite shape, cut from bright pink and orange felt, has been appliqued in place and enhanced with hand embroidery. A gift to be treasured! The background of this cuff has been hand knitted in a mohair yarn using a lace stitch for textural interest. The stitch chosen results in pretty scalloped edges to the cuff. The central part of the background has been backed by felt to give a slightly firmer foundation for the embroidery. The roses have been stitched, using ribbon embroidery techniques, in an organza ribbon, in ivory. Tapestry wools have been used to stitch additional rose budsand leaves. The back is a blue and white striped canvas-type fabric. This pincushion is 'postage friendly'. It is less plump than some of my others and can be posted at 'large letter' rate - a significant postage saving. Inside the base of this pincushion is a panel of plastic cut from a recycled milk bottle - as a precaution in case of protruding pin points. Please take care not to 'stab' the pin cushion too forcefully or the plastic layer may be pierced. The centre of the pincushion has a button stitched through the base, to restrict its depth.
